WordPress heeft zelf ook door dat het systeem steeds geschikter wordt voor niet-blog’s, vandaar ook dat de slogan “Just another WordPress blog” vanaf WordPress 3.0 verandert is naar “Just another WordPress site“. Een kleine wijziging die veel zegt over de ontwikkeling van WordPress en wat we in de toekomst kunnen verwachten. De wijziging van de slogan is natuurlijk niet de enige wijziging in 3.0, dit zijn de belangrijkste vernieuwingen:

Nieuw standaard thema
Vanaf het ontstaan van WordPress heeft WordPress één standaard thema gekend, dit thema is tot op de dag van vandaag het standaard thema wanneer je een nieuwe WordPress blog aanmaakt. Vanaf versie 3.0 komt daar verandering in, er is namelijk een nieuw (simpel) standaard thema genaamd Twenty Ten (2010), er is een demo beschikbaar.

Meerdere site’s (voorheen MU)
Een veel gevraagde functie die nu eindelijk in de reguliere WordPress geïmplementeerd is: Dankzij WordPress MU kun je op één installatie verschillende site’s/blog’s laten draaien, deze kunnen zelfs op verschillende domeinen functioneren, de gebruiker merkt er helemaal niets van. Om dit mogelijk te maken bestaat er vanaf nu een Super Admin rang.

Extra weergaveoptie’s
Gemakkelijk de achtergrond of header van een theme aanpassen is vanaf nu mogelijk in de admin onder het kopje Appearance/Weergave, zo hoef je niet meer in de css allerlei wijzigingen te maken.

Aangepaste menu’s
Een andere functie die ontbrak, en waardoor WordPress de concurrentie met o.a. Joomla nog niet echt aan kon gaan is het handmatig aanmaken van verschillende menu’s. Het was altijd al mogelijk om een menu aan te laten passen aan de hand van de pagina structuur, deze oplossing was echter verre van ideaal. Vanaf nu is het in de admin mogelijk om meerdere menu’s aan te maken en te beheren.

Mochten deze nieuwe functie’s jou net als mij aanspreken en wil je eens kijken hoe het allemaal precies in elkaar steekt, download dan nu de beta 1 van WordPress 3.0. Zodra de officiele versie van 3.0 beschikbaar is, zal ook mijn weblog overgaan op WordPress 3.0

This is an early beta. This means there are a few things we’re still finishing. We wanted to get people testing it this weekend, so we’re releasing it now rather than waiting another week until everything is finalized and polished. There’s a ton of stuff going on in 3.0, so this time we’re giving you a list of things to check out, so that we can make sure people are testing all the things that need it.

You Should Know:

  • The custom menus system (Appearance > Menus) is not quite finished. In Beta 2, the layout will be different and a bunch of the functionality will be improved, but we didn’t want to hold things up for this one screen. You can play with making custom menus, and report bugs if you find them, but this is not how the final screen will look/work, so don’t get attached to it.
  • The merge! Yes, WordPress and WordPress MU have merged. This does not mean that you can suddenly start adding a bunch of new blogs from within your regular WordPress Dashboard. If you’re interested in testing the Super Admin stuff associated with multiple sites, you’ll need some simple directions to get started.
  • We’re still fiddling with a few small things in the UI, as we were focused on getting the more function-oriented code finished first. For example, we’re getting a new icon for the Super Admin section.

Things to test:

  • Play with the new default theme, Twenty Ten, including the custom background and header options.
  • Custom Post Type functionality has been beefed up. It’s really easy to add new types, so do that and see how it looks!
  • WordPress MU users should test the multiple sites functionality to make sure nothing broke during the merge.
